Front panel for the cardigan (I knit two of these)

Shawl for Theory

As a part of Theory’s collaboration with Pratt’s Fashion Collection and Communication MFA program I developed, programmed, and knit this shawl.

Development

Development for the back panel (oops wrong feeder on the left shoulder)

Sleeve panel (I also knit two of these)

<- Okay I fixed it

At this point I felt I had a good file size, loop length number, and color order to start putting them out.

FINAL PROJECT

Stemming from my exploratory studio research, I wanted my final knit to be in line with problems a modern woman faces, one of which is the “need” to be beautiful.

For my research, I wanted to look at how this is depicted in media and who is perpetuating this.

This sweater was different frames of Kylie Jenner applying her lipstick. When each was played sequentially together, it would create an animation. The reason I chose Kylie Jenner is because she is the owner of Kylie Cosmetics, which is a massive cosmetics company which preys and perpetuates harmful and unrealistic beauty standards.

Another one of the same.

In the manga series Dandadan, a demon named Reiko Kashima attacks the main character. Throughout multiple fights, it is revealed that Kashima is extremely vain and narcissistic, often re-applying makeup to “be beautiful” and trapping her victims in a mirror.

Beauty of Joseon’s combination moisturizer + sunscreen is what I use on my face every morning. I wanted to see how they advertise their both utilitarian (promoting good skin health) and beauty (traditionally, good skin = beauty) product.

I wanted to see how Vogue perpetuates these standards as well. Here they do through their “Beauty Secrets” series on YouTube.

Initial Sketch

Production

I took Vogue’s Kylie Jenner Beauty Secrets video and cut the video into individual frames. I then took those frames and knit a jacquard swatch per frame, testing to see what worked and what did not per frame.

Topwash wool, merino wool, cotton

23.75” x 21.5”

Jacquard Swatch

Gauge w 6sts = 1” / l 5sts = 1”

This one turned out way too big, the loop lengths were way too large. Plus I didn’t like the order of the colors.

Topwash wool, merino wool, cotton

18” x 16.5”

Jacquard Swatch

Gauge w 8sts = 1” / l 9sts = 1”

This one was still too big, while the loop lengths were better they were still too large. I preferred this color order.

Jacquard Tension Swatch

Top Gauge w 7.5sts = 1” / l 10sts = 1”

Middle Gauge w 11sts = 1” / l 9.5sts = 1”

Bottom Gauge w 10sts = 1” / 12sts = 1”

I kept the file size the same with this one, but shrunk the loop lengths. I also changed the bright red to a bit of a warmer crimson.

Topwash wool, merino wool, cotton

8.25” x 7.5”

Jacquard Swatch

Top Gauge w 11sts = 1” / l 11sts = 1”

I kept the file size and kept the same loop lengths as the previous one. I wanted to play with the color orders.

Jacquard Tension Swatch

Top Gauge w 8sts = 1” / l 6sts = 1”

Middle Gauge w 9sts = 1” / l 7sts = 1”

Bottom Gauge w 9sts = 1” / 7.5sts = 1”

This one was a much better size. The loop lengths were still a bit too big, but I was getting closer. I preferred this color scheme, but the bright red hurt my eyes.

Topwash wool, merino wool, cotton

5” x 3.5”

Jacquard Swatch

Gauge w 13sts = 1” / l 10sts = 1”

I shrunk the file size. I wanted to see how small I could get it. This I felt was too small, it didn’t read as Kylie Jenner, much less a person even. Loop lengths and colors the same.
